  • What kind of paint for the bilge / floor?

I'm wondering what experiences people have had with various paints in the bottom of the boat.

I know a marine bilge paint is ideal, but also expensive. I'm painting the floor of our 13ft. Shell Lake runabout. It's an outboard so I don't expect much in the way of petroleum stuff floating around. I'm mostly interested in durability under foot.

There's the marine paints, Home Depot style garage floor epoxy or what about latex?

    Thanks -Zachary

    Bilge Paint

    Zachary -

Good to see you back on the message board...

If you want to avoid the expense of Interlux Bilgekote, go to the hardware store and buy "porch paint," which is a very durable, marine-like enamel that doesn't have marine-like prices attached.

It'll be great for the runabout...

Zachary, I used rustoleum on my sea swirl floor and interior sides when I restored it last year. Its 8 bucks for a quart and is very durable. I know alot of people that have painted thiere boats with rustoleum. It really isnt bad. The floor can be a bit slippery of it gets wet. Use a off white. I heard the garage floor paint can crack if it is used inside a boat because I almost used that stuff myself but I dont know forsure, Mike.................
ps you have to use the stuff in the white can but its a new color can in some cases but oil based is what you want. Heres a link......http://www.rickwrench.com/index79mas...llarpaint.html

PS. PS. im not trying to be a rustoleum pusher or anything, lol

            Lowes porch paint

The floor of the Yard Art that I mentioned in the main forum was painted with a non skid porch paint purchased at Lowes that has not changed in 5 years of abuse. Even with oil or green growth it doesnt get slippery and it does not peel when painted over fiberglass. jOHN

              Porch Paint

Nice suggestion, John. Porch paint is one of the best enamels out there--and of course it's cheaper than anything with "Marine" on the label. I haven't tried Lowe's porch paint, but have been really happy with other brands.

                Shelf Brand

Marty, Lowes had only 1 brand of non skid on their shelf and I dont remember the brand. It was a latex paint and Im under the impression that they are all the same, just different distributers. John
