I was wondering if anybody has sized up the cowlings and covers of the old motors buy placing them over the new motors to give a boat that vintage look with a new powerplant. Motors have gotten smaller. Even if you used one with a bigger horsepower. John

The reliability of the new motor would be great but what I love is the sound of the old motors, especially the old Mercs which are ideal for the Sande Ace and other boats of that era.
Our neighbors on Hood Canal say they can hear us coming from a long way.
Click below for a 4 MB video w/sound of the '59 Mark 35A which Marty sold to Tom Regan (Grapeview Point Boat Works) a few years ago.
Finally, our Ace's old Cloud White Merc gave us 1-pull cold starts for the 2 1/2 weeks that it was in the water this summer! The boat's original motor didn't do that well in 1959! I know because I was there!!

John,
I `ve been waiting to try this some time,my plan is to put a spacer plate of Alum beteen the Powerhead Base Gasket area. Then fit a pan and Cover to fit over whatever newer motor is hidden inside.
The driveshaft does have enough splines to allow a 1/8 or 3/16`` sheet of Alum, primered so it doesn`t cause corrosion.
Then outline the older base cover and make a transition plate.
My ultimate goal on some is to remove the sticky 2 stroke Powehead and swap for a Diesil Starter in 32 Volts .....like Norm Boddy did awhile back.
Though being quiet would be like Sterilizing the Moment.

Norm did what? How cool that sounds. What will a 32 v. diesel starter power? Put a G3 up on plane? Need what? Maybe 1,000 lbs. of batteries for a decent cruise? Suppose you could put a quiet generator in there somewhere to keep the batteries charged. Oh, the possibilities! There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness.":shocked4:

There are a lot of the 2 strock motor that are half way new and still have the good sound to them and in almost any Hp you might want. Some of the guys back east were they have hp restricktions on hp will put a 10hp hood on a 20hp motor and get away with it.

Theft Proof
Well not exactly theft proof but to have that "old motor" look may deter the scumbags who pray on newer expensive motors. Well now that I think about it some of those "old motors" you guys are useing are worth quiet a bit. Remember to do something to make your boat harder to steal. John

Jerry ,
Norm Did 72 MPH BOTH ways on Lake Havasu.
Didn`t last long and he even pulled the stunt on Gree Lake before being cited by Police.Ticket was ddropped but he was scolded by the Juge and told never to do THAT agin.
Well,not on that Lake anyways.
The throttle control has to handle heat of batteries and his 10` Hydro probably weighed more than he wanted.
John,
Just Felt penning a Driver`s License # can get you a motor back, put it under the cover and in a few weird places (Under the Gas Tank or on Flywheel under a recoil....) A savvy service guy may call you up with a lost motor another brought in for service.
A Fishing friend got his Sailmaster OMC back from Tom`s OB in Olympia when a guy brought one in for service but didn`t know what the name on it meant....guess his co-worker at Renton Boeing had a day gig......and my buddy had lost another kicker prior to that where the same perp lined up the bolts after removal from the real owner`s hull.

Speaking of electric power, Tom Regan built a beautiful electric launch and uses it to cruise around the Allyn/Grapeview area.
