Hi, My name is Jake and I have always been interested in purchasing and restoring an old yacht someday. I thought joining a forum would be great for learning things and preparing my portfolio with ideas and plans and what kind of yacht to buy someday.

    About me:

I am twenty and seven years old. Middle child of three from a middle class family. I am a bladesmith hobbiest. I am currently enrolled at Heritage Baptist College in Dewitt, MI majoring in Biblical Studies.

    Current Career:

I am the Master Electroplating Specialist, Supervisor at Proctor's Metal Finishing. My job is to control all the custom plating needs of all metal substrates that need to be ran through the Copper, Nickel, and Chrome Plating Lines. I supervise the department and am involved hands on with my plating department. I hand wire, rack, and run the job orders through the plating lines to along side my crew. I also titrate the baths and control all chemical adds. I also am the troubleshooting expert in the plating department, as well.

I love what I do. I enjoy never knowing what kind of part may be in the works coming up to me from the polishing department. Last week I plated a .22 revolver, Schwinn bike parts, motorcycle parts, classic car parts, and a few boat parts.

So I need not help with any plating or polishing and buffing needs when I am ready to purchase a yacht someday. (I am son-in-law to the owner). BUyt besides that on an old yacht I have no idea how to restore one so I have lots of work set out for me.

I will, of course, start out with a small fishing boat for practice and work my way up to a small yacht.

I have a wife, four dogs, two cats, chickens, and rabbits. I own my own home with 2.5 acres.

I love to fish, attending church, writing, and bladesmithing.

Hi Jake and Welcome to the group.

Ok Everyone, looks as we have a Chrome person to possible send all of our restoration cleats, chocks and other nifty little items to now VeryBigSmile

If your wanting to learn how to restore boats, small or large, the principles are all the same. The bigger they are, the more materials your going to consume.
You will find a few more structural challenges in the larger ones but again, pretty much, its a boat.

Mark, one of our moderators, has done a step by step resto on his Bell Boy.
Marty Loken at Island Boat Shop used to own and operate the Wooden Boat Shop located in Seattle and knows every aspect of bringing wooden boats back from the dead. He even has some of his own designs...

I have one of our friends Bell Boy that I did that shows the process of replacing the cockpit floor, transom and bulkhead.
Shows one how to create patterns using a sheet of 4x8 door skin cut into 2" strips and pop cycle sticks

So, lets hear more about the chrome company. Do you do small projects ?opcorn1:

That is why I think I will start with something small. Maybe even a small wooden fishing boat. If I can do that and enjoy it, which I should, then I will move up to larger projects. VeryBigSmile

In my wait times in plating I come to the office to keep warm (perks for being son-in-law to owner) So I use this time to do all my research. What are recommended as the best woods to use on a wooden boat restoration and what kind of water treatments are the best to use?

Proctor's does big and small projects. Majority is custom, down to single piece orders. Many of you probably have heard of Don Danenburg, first man to write the book on restoring the old criscrafts. Proctor's do all of his work. So I can vouch for you Proctor's know what they are doing with boat parts. Favorite work to do too... compared to motorcycles, cars, and bikes.

Will I be needing any expensive tools to do a wood boat restoration or is the basic tools about what I would need? This is a first so I have no idea how or what I will be doing. Can I get the link to Mark's Bell boy step by step restoration job so I can see more of what I will get myself into:BigWink1:
