  • Travel Options for Saturday's 31' Skagit Launch

There are several options for members who'd like to participate in the big launching party next Saturday, June 6, to celebrate near-completion of Tim Jones' 20-year restoration of the oh-so-rare 31-foot Skagit Saratogan.

Obviously, some NWCBC members will attend aboard their own boats, and at least a few will turn the launch party into a weekend-long tour of the San Juan Islands, after joining in the fun at Friday Harbor.

As mentioned in adjoining postings (below), the tide will be quite low next Saturday morning, so some members launching then may wish to use Skyline Marina's all-tides facility. (Google 'Skyline Marina' to see website and details.) Another option would be to launch Friday afternoon or evening and make the run across to Friday Harbor, avoiding the low-tide launching-ramp issue.

For those who'd like to participate without bringing boats, you can take the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes to Friday Harbor as a foot passenger. Saturday's best departure from Anacortes leaves at 9:35 a.m. (arriving in Friday Harbor at 10:40 a.m.). The next boat going directly to Friday Harbor doesn't leave Anacortes until 2:40 p.m., arriving in Friday Harbor at 3:45 p.m. Check the Washington State Ferries website, www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries, for details on schedules, fares, etc., or call (888) 808-7977.

A great option for those traveling from the west side of Puget Sound is the San Juan Express tourboat, with daily round trips from Port Townsend to Friday Harbor, departing Port Townsend's Point Hudson Marina at 9 a.m., arriving in Friday Harbor around noon, and returning to Port Townsend at 2 p.m. or so...with final arrival back in Port Townsend at 5 p.m. Included along the way is some whale-watching, with commentaries from the boat's on-board naturalist. Round-trip fares are $78.50 per person ($53.50 for children), and you need to be at the San Juan Express office by 8:30 a.m. on the day of departure. (You can overnight in Friday Harbor with the same round-trip ticket if you wish, returning any afternoon you wish.) For details and reservations, contact San Juan Express in Port Townsend at (360) 385-5288 or check their website, www.pugetsoundexpress.com

We'll either take our boat directly from Mystery Bay, or let San Juan Express do the driving...and enjoy some whale watching along the way.
