  • Spring is here, the Bearcat 85 is ready.

Operating room seems a little dead lately so I thought I'd update on the 85. I had drained all the fluids last winter so last Wednesday it got fresh lower unit oil, new oil filter and fresh engine oil. Out of the garage it came and I fired it up. It ran great till the float stuck on the top carb. Fixed that and fired it back up on Saturday. I ran it about 3 hrs and it runs fine. Idle speed is a consistent 600 rpm with the hood on and I think the louvers I put in the hood has solved the idling problem. I'm really happy with the way it runs now and can't wait to get it back on the boat to try it out. It will not troll on my boat at 600rpm though, we had to have at about 400rpm and it's not going to do that, specs are for 600-650. So if I'm going to use it for fishing it will need a trolling plate, not sure if I want to do that. Fixed a couple more oil weeps and am down to one now. I think that one is at the fuel pump gasket. It's certainly been a hell of journey with this engine!

      62 Homelite done

Got my 62 Homelite ready to mount back on the pontoon.
Got a new 4 blade 8" pitch prop from Bill R.
Was running a 3 blade 9". I think this 8" with improve performance.
I had to change the cam and re set the valve clearence with those little spacers that look like watch batteries.
All back together and barrel tested.
Will update when she is back in operation.

It was working good last summer until the springs came loose in the distrbiutor and bound up causiing the dist key drive to break. The newer Homelites/Bearcats have the replaceable nylon drive key.
