I'm envious that you have that large group going up to Stehekin - A bunch of us from ACBS did the trip from Chelan to Stehekin for five years in a row and it remains one of my favorites, -one that we will do again.

We did it twice in the Dakota, twice in the Skagit, once in "Sindbad".

That said - Chelan can be one of the most treacherous lakes you will ever encounter. The wind comes in out of the north most of the time, and there are very few places to hide. Check your map/chart, id the park docks along the way above 25 mile, (if all are open there are four) and plan on a group rendezvous at each one, unless the weather is smooth. Do not leave anyone behind. You can run safely within 50-100 feet of the shoreline all the way up.

It has been windy in the past week, and fairly cool, so be prepared. My suggestion is that the fleet be on the water early in the morning, as you can generally be assured of smooth sailing until 10:00 am or so.

Stehekin is great, with a restaurant, store, bikes to rent - go to the waterfall!- good lodging, good docks and gas. If the bakery is open up the road, don't hesitate.

With that said, we are looking doubtful since our parts haven't shown up. Bill quickly sent our Homelite gaskets on Saturday via USPS Priority Mail from Coupeville. They reached the Kent sorting facility that night, instead of heading 22 miles North to our house they ended up in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday. Tracking of said shipment magically isn't available right now. USPS does a stellar job 99.9% of the time, guess this is the exception.

Late entrant

The planets have aligned and Cheryl and I have decided to join in on the Lake Chelan adventure. I didn't want to commit until we figured out what we wanted to do. We will be leaving for 25 Mile campground sometime Friday afternoon (work comes first). We will stay both nights there. Saturday we will join the group on a day trip up the lake. Depending on weather (and wind) we will either go all the way up and back down, or partial way. We like to boat camp, but don't want to load down the boat with all the camping stuff on an unknown and apparently fickle body of water. Plus the unknown camping arangements in Stehekin were bothering us. I don't have a Cell phone(and hopefully never will:shocked4. Cheryl has one and we'll get the number out to everyone at 25 Mile. There are 2 campgrounds in the Stehekin area with a dock at each. I plan on staying on my boat too. But the campgrounds are nice if you want to stay in a tent.

Greg, I certainly understand. We were looking forward to having you along on your first outing with us. If this were to be Susie's first time out with me I would have second thoughts about it also.
Everybody, the weather report is looking really good and it progressivly gets better with a forcast of partly cloudy and 67 degrees on Sat. with a 20% chance of rain to partly cloudy and 70+ degrees and a 10% chance of rain on Mon. for the Lake Chelan area. Don't know about the wind but as I said before And Dick Dows' has suggested (thanks Dick) if we stick together and run and duck if we do run into problems with big water we all should have a great time. We do have a couple of people who have expierience on Lake Chalan ( Marty and Lowell) who will be with us. Maps of the lake will also be available.
For the people who are interested in caravaning we will meet at Lake Tye just off of highway 2 a little west of Monroe at 12 noon Fri.. If you are going to be late please let us know.

So...

Typical Flaherty fashion, I am trying desperately to get my crew together for this event. We have been talking about trying to do this on our own for 2 years and now I can do it with a pack!!!

Unfortunately Michele is working this weekend, therefore I have just me in the boat right now, and I really don't like taking the Chris Craft out without at least one trusted crewman. I am working on my father, my brother and possibly a few friends. How does the group feel about guests coming and cruising with us in their own boats if they are not paid members?? Obviously they would not be partaking in any of the group stuff like potlucks or meetings...

If I can pull this off, we will be headed out of Seattle mid afternoon (3-4ish) Friday and likely driving all the way out so we can be on the water first thing in the am Saturday..

great group of people

I received a call this afternoon, from a gentleman named "halffast32", otherwise known as Gordon Davies. This was unusual since Gordon is seemingly the only man on the planet that doesn't have a cell phone-choosing instead a tightly stretched string and an empty Campbell's soup can as his goto communications device.

Knowing that we once again are not ready to bring our own boat to a NWCBC event, he generously offered one of his "ready-to-go, just-add-driver" specials for use on Lake Chelan this weekend. With regret I cannot take him up on his offer to control 200+ horsepower with the flick of a wrist. Gordon and his wife Cheryl, like most everyone I have met in the club, are "top shelf" people. Holly and I hope that everyone has a fantastic weekend at Stehekin.

Instead, I will attempt to make a significant dent in the Glastron to-do list so I can make good on my deal with Joe, Mark, and the gang @ Mason Lake.:TakePicture1:

Chelan Weather

This morning's weekend forecast for Lake Chelan looks fantastic, with winds of only 5-10 mph during our cruise period on Saturday, and about the same all weekend. Winds will generally be from the north, meaning they build steadily as they approach Chelan at the south end of the big lake. I was reading a fishing-related Chelan website last night, and the professional guides said the worst winds on Chelan are between 25-Mile Creek and the town of Chelan, an area they call the "Strait," as in Strait of Juan de Fuca, with more tolerable winds north of 25-Mile Creek (where we're going).

So, we may encounter some winds--and the lake can blow up at any time--but the forecast is pretty nice.

Nice of cell-deprived Gordon to make the offer, Slo-Mo....yes, a lot of very nice people in this club. Have fun with your ongoing PhotoShop work on the Glastron; we'll look forward to seeing the finished creation at Mason Lake, along with the hologram of "Holly."
