Flyby permit

I got a response from Sergeant Bill Wise, Skagit County Sheriff's Office via Marci Plank, that I need to apply for a permit some time in advance to do the flyby.

No, Chuck, it's no joke and the Saratogan above 20 knots makes a pretty soft wake. I'm very wake conscious and have watched many boats cross my wake. Even running in a circle, the Saratogan's wake is not much.

I passed close (probably less than 40 feet) from Bruce B. in the Willa B and well the camera goes wild, but Bruce was multitasking and did a pretty good job of capturing the action.

You guys will just have to cross the Saratogan's wake and judge for yourselves. Only in the 9 to 13 knot range (bow high, stern squatting) is the wake a bit intimidating....

I've found that some boats make a harsh wake and some a soft wake. The Bayliner 32 and 38 for example make a very harsh wake and I swear at them every time I see one underway, whether I'm going to cross its wake or not...

Currents, Swinomish Channel

I've lost track of the posting, but I think you asked earlier about calculating current flow in Swinomish Channel...in connection with the LaConner show...(?)

By coincidence, Three Sheets Northwest just ran a feature on navigating the channel, and here's their cheat sheet for Swinomish currents:

1. Use the Seattle tide chart and add 30 minutes.

2. Slack current occurs at 2.5 to 4 hours after the point of high or low tide.

3. Current flows north from 2.5 to 4 hours before high tide...and continues 2.5 to 4 hours after.

4. Current flows south from 2.5 to 4 hours before low tide...and continues 2.5 to 4 hours after.
