Check your smoke detectors

I know that you are tired of being reminded to change your smoke detector batteries...Despite the fact that I religiously make sure that our tenants have working fire alarms, I neglected to check my own elderly Mother's equipment-and will regret it for the rest of my life.

She was lost forever, when some discarded cigarette ashes smoldered in a wastebasket, setting fire to the exit of her bedroom-soon engulfing half of her home before firefighters arrived. I hope that all of you will learn from our devastating experience.

While I don't blame myself, action on my part could have minimized our pain. Please make sure that your loved ones, neighbors and friends are protected from this preventable situation.

Really sad to hear ,makes a wet boat seem like nothing.
Let`s hope we have a better year from here on out......doing whatever we can within our powers.Some things we learn the hardest of ways,sorry you had this one little thing cause so much harm.

Thanks for the reminder. So sorry for your loss. I read about it in the paper. I don't think she was elderly since I'm only a year or two younger.
I take care of my alarm but I didn't think of my mom's. I'll be checking it out this week.

Thanks for the support guys, like Tim says-learn from my mistakes, rather than the hard way. We always seem to think that it won't happen to us.

I agree with you, Dave- she wasn't elderly by age or spirit, but was disabled from having multiple sclerosis, which may have limited her ability to battle for her life by breaking a window and crawling out. She was my hero with how she handled her daily life, and was very low maintenance-thus nobody caught the detectors without batteries...she burned a few pans in her days, so the batteries disappeared.

I will go check mine right now. We heat with a wood stove too.
