  • Kalakala SOLD.....(Chuck...???)

I noticed this morning that the historic ferry Kalakala has been sold for $1.00 to an "anonymous donor," who has plans to restore the vessel.

There was no mention of socks over the stacks, but I suspect our ferry-fanatic associate, Chuck, was the buyer, since like me he's been "reloading" lately with project boats.

Come clean, Chuck. Was it you...???

    Kalakala sold!

Yes, I heard on the news last night. New owner apparently has the bucks to restore the old girl. Glad to hear. Was too close to being scrapped for comfort.

      Kalakala

...Maybe Sheila thought Chuck deserved a streamliner ferry in his Christmas stocking.

Well, I sure hope someone did really step up to the plate. Its about damn time.

The whole story behind the "powers to be" that just kept creating fines and being more of the problem than a cure just sickens me.

I just deleted at least 7 more paragraphs that I had written in a rant

                Squirrells with Tugboats....and deep pockets!

Trying to figure out what just etching ,priming and Re-painting the Alum per square Foot by itself,(then do some real conservative multiplying) and see why the project stalled repeatedly.
Hope it wasn`t bought for Alum scrap as well.
A friend towed it to Neah Bay the first time it was evicted locally.

                  Aluminum?

I think the only aluminum on the boat is the wheel house. Rest is steel. Silver paint...

The rest is steel and silver paint and rust. The wheel house is copper. Steel would have interfered with the compass. Was anything made of aluminum in 1935?

Airplanes? Didn't Lindberg fly an aluminum Spirit of St. Louis before then? I was only 1 year old in 1935 so don't recall seeing any aluminum boats.

My Google-fu tells me that Has Christian Oersted obtained a small amount of aluminum from bauxite in 1825. Until the late 1880s when the more efficient Hall-Héroult electrolytic process was developed for refining, aluminum was more expensive than gold.

                          Kalakala's new owner

I'm hoping that Paul Allen is the new owner of the Kalakala. He has the deep pockets to do justice to such a restoration project. I'll be there with the Saratogan (god willing) when the Kalakala is launched.

Ten bucks to the person who reveals the new owner..............

Did it mention Napolean had a set of teeth made of aluminum? Imagine they are still as good as new.

Not if Napolean was drinking a lot of sea water....
